I had a bad accident and almost got myself killed.
I went to Bornholm this weekend, a small island east of Denmark, which is famous for its beautiful coastline, old castle and most of all, sandy white beach.
I was on a bike tour. We were supposed to bike through most of the island with its steep climbs of roads. Bicycles in Denmark are far from the same with bicycles in China. It has separate brakes, with one in the front and the other as backpedal. And you have to shift your gear according to the road situation, in high gear uphill and low gear downhill. Of course, I had no idea of all these before I fell off my bicycle, or had no clear idea, to be exactly.
I was going downhill in high gear, and i could not stop my bike. It was heading directly for the sea gaining speed on the way. I took a turn left, however, there seemed to be no road ahead. Then I closed my eyes and bumped into the woods. I finally stopped, but the bike, which is very cool by the way, was broken. I hurt my leg, and it was bruised so badly that I could not move it. Then me and my bike were picked up by the person from the hostel, and were sent to our repair shops, me to the hospital and the bike to the repair station.
I lied in bed for the whole afternoon, but I still could not get myself on my feet. I went to the hospital. They took pictures of my leg, and gave me some painkillers. Fortunately, nothing was broken, because things could have been much worse. I was going to Bornholm to have fun, not a leg which I could not use. The whole weekend was ruined.
Anyway, I had a lot of hospital fun, sitting in a wheelchair for the first time of my life, lying in a sickbed pushed around by nurses, having a fantastic experience of the free health care system of Europe, and having wonder-working frozen beans on my leg for a whole night, because they did not have any ice. It was not bad. I was functioning as a clinical-test volunteer for the bean research business, which was of great honor to me. And I crippled around the next day, looking for the sandy white beach, picking apples on the way, taking pictures, competing with a hostile dog, having little fun talks with old ladies, attracting sympathetic looks, and of course good-will concerns.
Well, I have to say, it was quite an experience.
